I think I'm dyslexic. No! Really! I didn't have any problems reading this geocacher's name. (The 'G' is silent, right?) Gnirips has been caching for just over 1 year and has already amassed over 1,500 finds, and has placed 60 caches so far. If my math is right, that's 3.8 caches found per day and 1 cache hidden every week. That's a pretty impressive feat and is definitely why they were chosen as September's Manitoba Geocacher of the Month. We may want to introduce them to the Cachaholic Anonymous (GC1B70P) cache.
Skoki and Geocache at Machu Picchu
I have met Skoki at several geocaching events over the last few years. The one I remember the most is a breakfast event at the Smitty's on south Pembina. I had a chance to chat with her, Swelbergen and icimondo. A great group of women! All very positive and smiles. Skoki is one of our valued educators in Winnipeg. Not only is she a school teacher, she often brings her students out to find caches. I'm sure many future generations of geocachers will come from these classrooms. Read on to find out more about this month's Cacher of the Month.
I had seen several cache logs by someone named "ruylopez". I recognized the name as being Spanish, but didn't know what it meant. I knew that "muy" means "many" or "very", so I just figured it was a spelling error and that he was just Very Lopez ... of course, I was wrong about that. Although, knowing the word muy helped with my pronunciation of this caching name ruylopez = Roo-ee-lo-pez. I did finally have a chance about a month ago to ask what the meaning of his name was, and had to face-palm when he told me, as I had recently been asking him many questions about how to solve the Bobby vs. Boris cache. Of course, he would know how to solve this cache!?! I had the opportunity to meet his wife and son at the 2010 Hallowe'en event at the corn maze. His son makes an adorable dragon. Ruylopez has been caching for just over a year and has already found over 3,000 geocaches. That's approximately 7 caches a day... quite impressive.
I remember the first time I had met MissionMode. It was at the 2009 Holiday Event that the MBGA hosts each year. I was fascinated in the fact that he cached with a Delorme unit. As far as I have seen, he was the only Manitoban at the time to have one, and only the second geocacher I had met who used one. Yet, both cachers were huge fans of their GPS's. As time has gone on, I have had the opportunity to get to know MissionMode and his daughter TechDeckPerson. As we can tell from their hidden caches, she is a skateboarder and he is a music fan. I was pleased to be the FTF on his new "Do You Cache Too" cache. MissionMode is active in our community, attending events and helping out with GeoVenture. He recently had found his 1,000th geocache, I am sure there are many more thousands in his future.
This month's cacher of the month is another geocacher that I have not had the opportunity to meet yet. However, I have heard his name in our caching community for many years. Hailing from Southwestern Manitoba, he is one of the more active cache hiders in the area with 50 distinct hides (so far). If you're looking for something to do on a weekend this summer, why not plan a trip to the Winkler/Morden area and check out some of his caches! I guarantee it would be worth the trip!
