I have been approached by a few geocachers over the last few months looking for help with the various flavors of Magellan GPS.
From coordinate entry to map conversion and all things in between.
I have been too busy to set anything up, but I am finding myself with a bit more free time lately. So if anyone is interested, let me know.
Depending on the response, we can work out when (or if) this will happen and a venue.
Here are some of the more common questions I get and suggest this to be a "draft" agenda:
Map conversion/loading
GSAK (basic usage) usage and waypoint export
VantagePoint
Coordinate entry and POI/Geocache file management
Projections
So let me know by responding to this thread if you are interested.
I have experience with the Meridian and Xplorist units. I have yet to use the Triton. But my birthday is coming up.... _________________ Have you hugged a lizard today? |

I picked up my first gps, an explorist 500le about 6 weeks ago. It would be great to have an opportunity to learn more about it. I live a ways out of wpg but with enough notice I can make something work.
Thanks for the offer! |

What about a brief discussion of secure roof-mounts?

Dear Mr. Lizardo...
I am definitely interested for several reasons.
It has taken me 16 months to get this Magellan 500 loaded with rechargeable batteries and maps and running reasonably smoothly. I am still not paperless, but heading that way, sllloooowwwly. Any extra tips and tricks is appreciated.
Having said all that, I dropped my unit (if you'll pardon the expression) on a street in Grand Forks this weekend... and now, I am basically GPS-less.
I believe that the problem lies in the connection between the battery and the unit itself. The little pins that hold the SD card are broken and the card slides around and the battery doesn't fit properly.
All the whining aside, we are not sure if we should buy another Magellan or go to Garmin. I don't think the maps etc. are compatible between the 2 and that has pushed us towards Magellan. But reading all the bad Triton reviews, I am not sure which way to go.
Suggestions? _________________ If I love geocaching, why am I on this danged computer? |

| Hi – I use a Meridian Gold GPSr that I bought in the summer of 03, especially for Geocaching. It has served me well and I had no plans to replace it until I loaded the latest Magellan firmware onto it a couple of weeks ago. It’s been acting a bit strange since then, and it doesn’t seem as accurate, but I’ll keep trying to work out the new bugs for now. One thing I have never been able to figure out is how to project a waypoint from a current position. There are also a couple of other things, such as map conversion that would be nice to know so yes, I’d be interested in attending a Magellan seminar. |

All-right. It seems there is a modest, but attractive group of people who would be interested here. So lets look at a date/time.
Anyone have a problem with Thursday evenings?
I can work with that. Wednesdays are a possibility as well but it would have to be 8:00pm or later start.
So here are a couple of options:
Wednesday May 14th 8:00
Thursday May 15th 7:30
Wednesday May 21st 8:00
Thursday May 22nd 7:30
Let me know what you like. _________________ Have you hugged a lizard today? |

Yes, I think that May 22 could work.
Have not been able to figure out how
to download info directly to GPS after
just recently becoming "Premium" members.
Just let us know. |

I had a location fall through for this coming Thursday. I am going to try for a meeting space at Fort Garry United Church for Thursday the 29th. I will know by this Tuesday. Please post if you can make it.
The church is located at:
800 Point Road

We will be talking about:
Maps / Loading maps
Waypoint Management (eXplorist)
Off-GPS Waypoint Management (GSAK, EasyGPS)
Projections
Garmin Owners
And whatever else... _________________ Have you hugged a lizard today? |

Argggh - I just caught up with this thread. Been away for a few days and haven't checked in. The 29th is the event night, just for the record. I can't attend that or this. Busy time right now. Wish I could... but will have to learn new things from all of you that learn new things _________________ If I love geocaching, why am I on this danged computer? |
