I just found out about a new program called EarthTrek.
This is a program where you help scientists collect data on real research projects using your GPS and other equipment (camera, calipers etc). This is run by the Geological Society of America, the same people who are responsible for Earthcaches.
It's free to register and free to participate! The first 1000 people who register to be an EarthTrek participant will receive a package of materials through the mail including a certificate, EarthTrek card and a discount coupon to purchase official EarthTrek calipers.
To find out more information visit the EarthTrek website at www.goearthtrek.com.
P.S. I get bonus points if you tell them 'ertyu' introduced you when you register. |

I've registered, and have indeed listed 'ertyu' as the person of reference :}
EDIT: Aww... looks like the only project that's do-able in Manitoba is the Gravestone project. Once I've got a bit of time available (and find me some calipers), methinks I'll take a swing at it. It apparently all begins in July, so I've got some time to prepare. If I've got a day or so to kill, I know of some really obscure, virtually-unknown graveyards about 4 hours north.
EDIT 2: Suggest people sign up soon in if they want in on the free setup package to the first 1000 registrants... looks like it's at 355 members thus far. _________________ =======================

I'm registrant #98 (sorry ertyu, I didn't see this before I signed up otherwise I would have said you referred me). I'm a big science geek, so I'm looking forward to being able to help out on some of these research projects. |

I looked at this and sent the link to a couple of people I know. It's neat, but I know I wouldn't spend much time on this. |

Interesting.
I signed up on June 1st after receiving an email from Gary Lewis, EarthTrek Director for the Geological Society of America in Boulder Colorado.
By the time I signed up, I was already number 387!
(sorry ertyu, I didn't read the forum before hand)
Gary and I have been in contact since and it looks like the Oak Hammock Marsh and Ducks Unlimited might be partnering with EarthTrek!
Think of all the research possibilities! Whenever a cacher sees a duck or a bird they could mark it and we would have some awesome global database for bird migration patterns...Great for population status, especially those in decline.
I'll keep you posted! |

Changed my mind. I figure at least if I sign up, I can choose something that I can do when it comes available. (Like spot an OHMIC!) |

Just got the certificate, cards, and other assorted things from Earthtrek in the mail. Got my Earthtrek card in my wallet now, anyway
685 members so far... hmm, looks like the registration rate is going slower than I expected. _________________ =======================

If you haven't signed up yet and think its something of interest, signing up on July 1 will apparently net you a 'special gift'.
Sign Up and if you wouldn't mind, don't forget pick me in the 'Introduced By' box, "ertyu" |
