As all of you know, today is Earth Day! It is a great day to think about things that you as a responsible citizen of our planet can do to lessen our impacts on the environment. You can recycle, use less water, decrease the use of electricity in your home, hang your laundry outside to dry, compost or use refillable bottles for beverages. One great annual program is the "Mow Down Pollution" event that kicks off today! This event encourages and rewards Canadians for replacing their old, inefficient two- and four-stroke gas-powered lawn and garden equipment with cleaner alternatives.
70% of Canadian households still use gas-powered lawn equipment, which emit dangerous smog-forming and greenhouse gas emissions.
This event - co-sponsored with The Home Depot - encourages consumers to bring in a working or non-working gas mower, string trimmer, hedge trimmer or leaf blower to receive up to a $100.00 instant rebate on the purchase of an eco-preferred mower, blower, string trimmer or hedge trimmer.
The goal this year is to retire 10,000 pieces of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment for the 10th annual Mow Down Pollution event!
The program is nationwide and is the largest program of its kind in Canada. Since it started, over 34,000 mowers and trimmers have been retired and prevented more than 1,100 tonnes of greenhouse gas and smog-forming emissions.
Consumers are welcome to take advantage of the free, responsible recycling of their old gas-powered equipment with no obligation to make a purchase at The Home Depot.
I used this program two years ago, and it was wonderful!
