Last year it came to my attention that our group had not hosted a CITO event since 2009 so I organized one for World Environmental Day in June at Lagimodiere/Gadboury Park in St. Boniface and it was a huge success! I then decided to also organize one for GeoVenture weekend and that went well too. It was nice to see such a positive response from our geocaching community for both of these!
I have started planning for this year's World Environmental Day CITO and during my research discovered a great opportunity for our association:
The City of Winnipeg has an Adopt-A-Park program available and with a minimum two year commitment they would provide signage at the park stating our group name!
According to my contact in the parks department, they have some groups who each spring or fall (or both) come in and do clean ups and once that becomes an annual commitment they recognize the group with an adopt a park sign on site. Sometimes the relationships can grow to see volunteers provide other assistance such as planting beds or bench donations, etc.
What do you think?
Would you like to help us commit to adopting a park to clean up once or twice a year for the next couple years?
Please provide your feedback and/or suggest a park that you think could benefit from our group doing CITO at.
Notes:
a) I am hoping that we can get enough feedback to commit to this by June 5th but if we don't then the new deadline will be the end of August.
b) We will take a poll to pick from the park suggestions when the deadline has been reached. |

I like it, and i love the idea of our name and hobby getting out into the general public more, and giving us a good name.
Great idea! |

On a side note: This is my first time in the forum and my first ever post. I signed in just to reply to this thread! |

| I'll add the thoughts that have come up in the past about this idea. Historically attendance at CITO events has been quite low, such that it would be difficult to have enough people attend twice a year to clean an entire park. |

Thank you for bringing this up. I was wondering if you could please clarify more. My research shows the following:
GC1QBM4: Greening the Greenway CITO Day, 5/9/09 - 12 teams
GC2Q0R7: MBGA's World Environmental Day CITO, 6/5/11 - 13 teams
GC3182J: GeoVenture 2011 CITO, 8/28/11 - 25 teams [/list] |

I'm totally up for it and would make a great effort to come out to the park to do a clean up as it's close to home |

| Great idea, I am indifferent to which park is picked other than one that is closer to the northern park of the city since it's closer for me. |

| How about Bruce Park? It has a has a Cenotaph which is dedicated to the memory of those who died in the First World War, the Second World War, Korea, and to Canadian peacekeepers, is a location for wedding pictures, not too big, and is just across from Assiniboin Park, (The park on the other side of the walking bridge). |
