I have been considering this for a month or two myself. I have been in touch with Public Works as well as my local councillor about areas in or near parks that could be done by our group as part of a CITO event. Just thought I would ask around to see what location is in the greatest need. Some areas are already going to be cleaned up by area schools and community groups as part of an environmental awareness program. As much as it sounds odd to be competing over where to pick up trash, I thought it would be a good idea to plan ahead on this. If possible our group could address an area that is not already being targeted.
I am still waiting for word back from some folks, and when I have all of the information, I'll post it here. I have heard back from the Save our Seine people. They were not able to tell me any specifics about areas or best time of year to clean around the Seine river. There are groups already planning on taking on this area, so perhaps it would not be the best greenspace for a focussed effort by us.
What I was hoping is that we could have a picnic event in Assiniboine Park this summer (Early June?). Followed by a CITO effort in the park itself. Depending on the number of participants, we could split the area up and divide into groups to tackle the trash.
As far as the April 22nd effort, we may have snow still. It is hard to pick up garbage if it is covered in snow. I think Dani may have a plan for that day, as well. Tannasaurus was planning on hosting an Earth Day Pancake Breakfast, but after consulting with Dani, we were asked to hold off.
Another thought
...If I could put it together, would anyone consider attending a tree planting event? I have a friend associated with a group that will be planting native trees along the river around Wildwood Park. They are always looking for a hand.
