Here is a do-it-yourself gps kit. Not the swankiest GPSr out there, but you'd have definite cred if you ever got it working.

Canadian Tire has the Explorist 500 for $200 (#79-3897-2)
You could try price matching it at Best Buy to get it even cheaper.

GPSCENTRAL.CA sells the Garmin eTrex Venture cx for 248.00 and you can get the 50.00 US rebate if you purchase before the end of the year. That would put it in the same price range as the Magellan at Canadian tire.
I'm not sure which unit is better, this one or the Magellan. I bought the Venture and I'm really happy with it.

My friend, immoe, has accompanied me on a handful of caches over the last year and is considering trying some on her own. However, she doesn't have a GPSr, and doesn't want to spend much at all on one.
Does anyone have an old Geko or something that they'd part with?
She doesn't want to pay more than $50 for a unit. She doesn't mind second hand, as long as it works. _________________ I use multi-billion dollar military satellite systems to find Tupperware in the forest. |

Talking with one of the guys at the S.I.R. GPS sales counter a couple of weeks ago, the rumour is that Garmin will be announcing their next line of GPSs on Jan. 6, 2008. No hints as to what new capabilities might be added. Curious to see what they come up with. |

I saw some screen shots and information about the Garmin Colorado line of GPSr's on the groundspeak forums. That's likely the new line. _________________ Have you hugged a lizard today? |

Thanks for the info guys. Googling 'Garmin Colorado' comes up with a fair amount of early info.
After the great MBGA seminar, I started using GSAK to manage my geocaching data. I don't have a PDA and the only real use I would have for one would be to carry geocache descriptions. When I started thinking of upgrading, I didn't really want two pieces of gear to carry and started to look around for a GPS that would also hold complete cache descriptions. One of the Google leaks says that the Colorado 400i does that. Looks promising...
The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas looks like it would be a fascinating thing to take in some day. |

If you want the ultra basic for cheap:
Garmin Etrex for $60. I noticed stock in Portage (Port Laprairie) but not much elsewhere. |

| If anyone is looking for a great deal, I just saw this morning in the Canadian tire Flyer on page 29 a Garmin GPSMap 60CX for 249.99. As of this morning Canadian tire's on Mcphillips and Polo park still had some. |
