I experienced another first yesterday in my almost 5 years of geocaching. I received the email from Groundspeak listing all the new caches for the past week, and the list was empty.
I am guessing that is not uncommon here, especially during the cold winter months, but it was honestly the first time that I had seen that.

Tomorrow's a high of -19c (without windchill) but I'm going caching with my girlfriend all day. We're going to bundle up Arctic-Explorer style, and see how many caches we can do in one day. I'm assuming that temperatures will hover around -30 and lower (with windchill).
I'm plotting out a course through the city that will take us through the caches that we're interested in.

It did today, I had the gps loaded up and was ready to go, I got to the first location and started to walk, and my cheeks started to crack from the cold. Even I have more sense than to keep going after that.

I'm planning on attempting one tomorrow. Possibly one of the "Remember #" ones. Or there was a new one close to where I live, I may go tackle that.
But yeah, things have slowed WAY the hell down over winter for me :{

I was really surprised at the lack of anything in the weekly mail - it was not that cold at the start of the week. I try to get out one day each week to do some caching. The temperature is really not an issue. Even yesterday and today I still made the trip to work and travelled between both UofM campuses. It takes a little more thought on what I should wear but a good wind breaker, a few layers, and an old pair of wool flight pants usually does the trick. If I know I am stopping for a cache I will wear gators to keep the snow out of my shoes.

What keeps us from caching during - 40 is the loss of battery power in our GPSr quickly and the fear of returning to a vehicle and the engine won't turn over...School was cancelled for us today but what a waste of a good day - staying warm inside. Well no - actually we quite enjoyed it.

I'm heading out caching in a couple of hours... I'll make sure to update and let you guys know how it goes. I've mapped out a route starting along McGillivray all the way to St. Anne's near St. Vital... I'll be doing about a dozen (hopefully).
Thermal shirt Turtleneck Thermal hoodie Parka Touque Boxers Longjohns Snow pants Formal dress socks Thick wool socks Thermal winter hiking boots Hot Paws mitts
I weighed everything at 11.2 lbs.

Hi, I'm the guy who wrote this, but my gf and I decided to have just one username instead of having to repeat everything over on geocaching.com, so yeah... here's our one username.
We geocached for 2 1/2 hours out in the cold today, 6 different caches, from Wildewood Park to St. Vital park, to Dakota Park and finally ending up at Tim Horton's on Dakota. 3/6 successful ones, the rest we attributed to muggles or snow. We were super bundled so the snow was no problem at all.

Absolutely not! I would have gotten more than the two caches I got on Friday if I hadn't been held up for a couple hours having my cell phone replaced.
I got up Friday morning, saw the sun shining and said, "So help me God, I am going GEOCACHING today! And I will dress as necessary in order to do it!"
All you need is the right apparel and the cold is not an issue. I am a huge fan of winter caching, and will continue to cache as much as possible over the next few weeks.
Look out for us this week, because we want to try and meet our goal of 500 caches in our first year of geocaching, which means 22 more before next Saturday... So if anyone wants to do caching.........

Yeah, I ended up caving and not caching when I said I would.
Not 100% my fault though. My fiancee wanted to do a million extra things I didn't anticipate that day.
However, I let her know that on THIS Saturday, I'm aiming to find me some caches :P

While -40 is pushing the envelope a tad, we should be by the worst of it for a while. The bevro crew (with an additional 4 month old black lab pup this week) are ready to swing into full snowshoe search mode this weekend and tackle the great white north, taking full advantage of Manitoba's 'hard' waters. No need to bring the bug juice !
