About GIS Day
GIS Day is playing a powerful role in creating geographic awareness throughout our world.
GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.
Sponsors
GIS Day is principally sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and Esri.
GIS Day is part of the National Geographic Society's Geography Action, a year-long initiative encompassing key educational achievements such as GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week. Each year has a different geographic focus to explore and understand. The 2006-2007 program theme kicked off a five-year, around-the-world curriculum series with Africa in 3-D.
GIS users and vendors are invited to join the GIS Day sponsors in opening their doors for GIS Day.
History
The National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week since 1987 to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children. GIS Day is held on the Wednesday during Geography Awareness Week.
In 2010, hundreds of organizations hosted GIS Day events in countries all around the world. Read the 2010 success stories.
GIS Day 2011 will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. |
