I would like to organize a Churchill trip 2.0 for those of us who missed out on the first trip to Churchill (and Nunavut) organized by the Ztirnats in '09.

This quadrennial event would take place either

Wednesday August 7 to Sunday August 11

or

Wednesday August 21 to Sunday August 25

depending on the interest of cachers.

Please let me know which weekend would work the best for you.

The cost would be kept to a minimum with cachers carpooling to Thompson on the Wednesday and taking the train from Thompson to Churchill overnight. Thye drive to Thompson is approximately 8 hours (more if you are caching along the way...)

The train costs approximately $120 per person for a return trip. It is not the most comfortable ride in the world

We would spend two nights in Churchill, either at a hotel in town (double beds and private bathrooms) or at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre (2 bunk beds per room shared facilities)

Thursday would be a free day for people to rest and relax after the train ride and find the caches around Churrchill.

Friday would be gecaching day outside of town with 2 events: one in Nunavut at low tide with a bear guard and the other as a pub night in town.

Saturday would be a free day for those who would like to go kayaking or snorkling with beluga whales, polar bear watching or touring the fort.

Our train would leave Saturday night and arrive in Thompson on Sunday at around noon.

Let me know if there is some interest for this event and I will pursue the planning.

Is there a deadline for "registration?" I might potentially be interested but have to firm up some other summer plans to see if it would even work.
When do you have to know?

Depending on the weekend, I might be able to come down from Nunavut and join you folks in Churchill. Sounds like an interesting trip!

If I can work out the finances, I'm interested. The later date would be better for me as it is after GeoVenture.

Sounds like a great trip. I looked at how I could change my commitments/vacation, but both dates don't work for me.
Maybe Churchill Tour #3, if there is another.

Mr and Mrs. THz are interested. They prefer the late Aug dates. GFM has told me that Churchill trumps the wedding but I'll loose brownie points with his mom. But I'll take that risk and say I can go for the late August dates as well if THz is also coming!

Late August seems to have the most votes so the trip will be on August 21 to 25.

I will keep taking names down until August 2 or until we reach 30 people, whichever comes first.

Transportation:

For those coming from Winnipeg, carpooling to Thompson will make the trip more enjoyable and you can find caches along the way as well.

The train leaves Thompson on Wednesday Aug 21 at 17:00 PM and arrives in Churchill at 9:00 AM on Thursday Aug 22 (Train #693)

To return to Winnipeg, the train leaves Churchill on Saturday Aug 24 at 19:30 PM and arrives in Thompson at 11:30 AM on Aug 25 (Train #692)

The fare is $107.10 all taxes included.

Accomodation:

I will block some rooms at the Tundra Inn as we have a 10% discount when booking as a group.

Rooms are available for $135 per room per night and each room has either 2 double or queen beds. Each room comes with its own private bathroom. Internet and continental breakfast is included in the rate.

There is also the option of staying at the Tundra Inn Hostel with bunk bed style dorms. It has shared bathroom and kitchen and no breakfast included. These rooms are $35 per night per person.

There are 23 rooms available and 11 bunk beds.

Please let me know what type of accomodation you would prefer so I can reserve accordingly.

So far we have over a dozen people interested in the trip:

OHMIC
ruylopez
JB
Gnirips & Mrs. Gnirips
Jean Déniche
MHz & GFM
THz and Mrs. THz
MuStash
